How Does it Work?

Laser hair removal is performed using laser cosmetic systems such as the AerolaseĀ® system. As the wand is moved over the skins surface, it emits energy that is absorbed by the melanin pigment in the hair follicles. As this energy is absorbed, the generated heat destroys the follicles.

Does Skin Color Matter?

Because the energy admitted by the laser is absorbed by the pigments (melanin) in the hair follicles, it is also absorbed by pigment in the skin.

Therefore, darker skin will absorb some of this energy which may cause pain. The treatment will still be effective, but will may involve more pain compared to someone with lighter skin.

How Many Treatments?

Not all of our hairs grow at the same time, even hair in the same area. Our hair grows in cycles. Each new growth cycle needs to be inhibited by the laser. Therefore, in order to achieve permanent hair removal, the laser treatment must be performed about 4 or 5 times, with about 1 month in between. This is to assure that the follicles created by each and every new growth cycle are eliminated by the laser's energy.

Where to Get Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal can be done at home using a hand-held laser tool such as those made by Tria or Eplia. These devices will set you up back about $200 to $400 dollars; however, this is typically much less than what you would pay at a professional spa.

If you prefer to entrust your beauty to a laser hair removal professional, try doing a Google search for medical spas in your area, or even day spas. A medical spa is hybrid between a medical clinic and a beauty spa. There is always a supervising licensed medical doctor present, yet the environment is typically relaxing and soothing. Whether you prefer to do it yourself, or have a professional do it, it's important to remember that this process is permanent, so if you are looking for temporary hair removal, consider waxing.

Many people are now able to find great deals on laser hair removal using websites such as Groupon. This company gives group discounts for a variety of products and services. Be sure to remember, however, that you will need multiple treatments.
